Could you tell us about the inspiration behind starting Katie J Design and Events? What motivated you to venture into event planning and design?
My journey into event planning and design was sparked by a lifelong love for decorating and celebrating. It all began during my time at Warner Bros Movie World, where I had the opportunity to work on some truly spectacular events like premieres for Cats & Dogs, Harry Potter, and Scooby-Doo. From setting up themed banquets to being backstage for star-studded concerts, I was captivated by the meticulous attention to detail that went into transforming spaces into thematic wonderlands. These experiences fuelled my desire to delve deeper into the realm of event management.
After completing my traineeship, I pursued a Double Diploma in Events and Hospitality Management, graduating with distinctions and credits. Subsequently, I immersed myself in the role of Functions Coordinator at the Jindalee Entertainment Venue, orchestrating a diverse array of events ranging from weddings and birthdays to conferences and concerts. But as life took me down the path of parenthood, I found myself yearning for a way to blend my love for events with the joys of family life.
That’s when inspiration struck – quite literally at my own children’s birthday parties! With each passing year, I found myself crafting more elaborate themes and decorations, much to the delight of family and friends. Their encouragement gave me the push I needed to turn my passion into a profession, and thus, Katie J Design and Events was born in 2014. My mission? To sprinkle a little magic into the lives of others by creating custom-themed decorations for their special celebrations.

Clients can upload their own special photo or image, add their own text, or even an entire design that they have created from scratch using software like Canva.

And as a mum of three, I know how important it is to leave the world a little better than we found it.
That’s why we’re proud to donate any leftover materials to local schools and kindergartens for arts and crafts projects. And as we look to the future, we’re exploring even more ways to make a positive impact, from recycling plastics to reducing our energy consumption. Because when it comes to sustainability, every little bit helps.

Can you share a particularly memorable or challenging event that you’ve worked on? How did you overcome any obstacles, and what lessons did you learn from that experience?
Every event has its challenges, but it’s how we overcome them that defines us. Take my daughter’s Mermaid-themed birthday party, for example. With two weeks of non-stop rain leading up to the big day, I knew we’d have to get creative. Drawing inspiration from the theme itself, I transformed our outdoor area into an underwater wonderland using tarps and decorations.
What initially seemed like a setback turned into an opportunity for innovation, as the makeshift setup added an unexpected charm to the event. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability and creative problem-solving, skills that continue to serve me well in my career.
